The DBsnare concept was originally designed by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) and rigorously tested by professional gamekeepers and other wildlife managers across the UK. It is a modern fox cable restraint that is highly effective at catching and holding foxes and includes a breakaway link to allow heavier non-target animals to escape easily. The stop is fixed at 26cm from the eye, which also allows smaller non-target species to escape. The DBsnare is designed to be fully compliant with the advice given in Defra's Code of Practice on fox snaring. The DBsnare is also fully compliant with the new Welsh Government & Code of Best Practice on the Use of Snare in Fox Control.

Depending on your preferences, the DBsnare is available in two wire materials, galvanised or stainless steel, and with either a copper eyed crimp or a wire loop at the end of the snare. To aid in the control of foxes in wader breeding areas in Ireland, we now offer DBsnares compliant with Irish trapping regulations. These snares incorporate a stop fixed at 33cm from the running eye.

The price for each DBsnare variant is as follows:

Galvanised wire with wire loop = £3.95

Galvanised wire with eyed crimp = £4.25

Stainless steel wire with wire loop = £4.20

Stainless steel wire with eyed crimp = £4.45

Golden (Gold coloured stainless steel with eyed crimp) = £4.55

All prices exclude VAT @ 20%.

Copper tealers are sold separately

Wire type: Galvanised
Connector: Wire loop

Depending on your preferences, the DBsnare is available in two wire materials, galvanised or 316 stainless steel, and with either a copper eyed crimp or a wire loop at the end of the snare. While all variants of the DBsnare are designed to perform to the same standards as the original DBsnare, the different properties of the various components may alter re-use rates. If you are considering using our snare-repair service (see Extra Info tab) we would advise that you use stainless steel wire as this is marine-grade and will resist rusting for many years.

Quality assurance:

PERDIX only supplies equipment built to the highest standards. The DBsnare is no exception. All components and manufacturing processes used in the construction of the DBsnare have been carefully selected for consistent quality and have been professionally break-tested to ensure they meet all Code of Practice on fox snaring requirements. All crimps are hydraulically swaged using 25 tonnes of pressure. Please see specifications tab above for the results of these tests

Performance in the field:

During trials of the original GWCT snare, researchers asked gamekeepers to rate the performance of the GWCT snare against their normal choice of snare. The results of this survey were:

    • No users rated GWCT snares as worse than their normal snares.
    • 18% rated GWCT snares as ‘no different from’ their normal snares.
    • 47% rated GWCT snares as ‘better than’ their normal snares.
    • 35% rated GWCT snares as ‘much better’ than their normal snares.

No differences in escape rate between GWCT snares and 'Other' snares were found.

Animal welfare:

Capturing wild animals brings welfare responsibilities.  The features incorporated in the GWCT snare are designed to hold foxes without causing injury and release non-target animals without injury. When used in accordance with the guidelines set out in Defra's Code of Practice on fox snaring, 99% of foxes were held alive with no visible injuries. The GWCT snare was also found to release 68% of captured brown hares and 39% of badgers. Of those badgers that did not escape, 92% were released with no visible injuries. The results of the GWCT snare trial were published in the peer-reviewed scientific publication Wildlife Society Bulletin in 2012.

Breakaway clip:

Our breakaway clips have been specifically designed and manufactured for use in the DBsnare. They will hold foxes but allow non-target species such as hares, badgers and deer to escape.  They have been professionally break-tested using a calibrated digital straight-pull machine to test for consistency. Please click on the 'specifications' tab above for more details. For guidance on how to correctly replace breakaway clips, download our guide -  Instructions for replacing breakaway clips on DBsnares.

Snare-use in the Republic of Ireland:

With the increasing awareness and concern of declining wader populations in Ireland,  Perdix are increasingly asked by conservation organisations to supply predator management equipment to protect waders during the breeding season. Fox snares used in Ireland must have the stop fixed at 33cm from the running eye. If you require DBsnares for use in Ireland please contact us prior to ordering. Further information on the regulations pertaining to the use of snares in Ireland can be found here :

S.I. No. 620/2003 - Wildlife Act 1976 (Approved Traps, Snares and Nets) Regulations 2003

Snare repair:

PERDIX now provides a 'snare-repair' service. Because the high quality components used on the DBsnare will last years it seemed sensible to offer our customers a repair service.  By using this service it will save you time, money and ensure all the snares you use are made to a consistent quality and can therefore cite the specifications we provide if challenged. Please click on the 'Extra Info' tab above for more details.
